The Planning [Easter at Champions Centre]

The creative team at Champions Centre started planning for their 2015 Easter services in February. Their team dynamic is such that they can’t do the six-months out thing. They work at a fast pace and try to make each weekend service pretty big. So normally, they’re planning more like four months out, with their Team Conference planning being the exception. When they began talking through Easter, though, they didn’t know what their pastor would be talking about. Pastor Kevin Gerald is very spontaneous. They’ve tried (or he has) over the years to get more locked down and create a...

Enjoy seeing what other modern churches were singing this weekend, and click through to hear if there are some songs you haven’t discovered yet. (Purists will notice some of the artists listed aren’t the ones who actually wrote the song. For ease, I just chose the most popular version of the song in most cases.) 1. This is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham 2. Great Are You Lord by All...

Why Music Matters in the Church

Whether it’s the main event or in the background, music plays an important part in our lives. It’s a gentle soundtrack while we’re shopping, at the coffee shop, or even in an elevator. Or other times, we spend hundreds of dollars to experience music with hundreds of our closest friends at a concert hall. Movies without music are emotionally bland. Working without a soundtrack is depressing. And driving in silence is most often a sign that you and your spouse got into an argument. Music’s important in life. But it seems to have an almost sacred role in the...

The Visual Runway

You’ve heard of helicopter parents, right? They’re the parents who hover around their children, keeping them from any potential danger or failure. They’re overprotective, thereby stifling their child’s creativity and the chance to discover new things on his or her own. Helicopter parents, it’s been discovered, are not good. I don’t want to talk about helicopter parenting, though. This is a creativity magazine. Instead, I want to talk about helicopter design. Specifically, the illustration I’m making is about the way they helicopters get into the sky. A helicopter takes off straight up. The engine whirrs and, once there’s enough power, takes...

The 10 Most Popular Worship Songs This Week

One of my favorite resources as a worship leader is a site called PraiseCharts. It shows you how churches are using CCLI licensed songs, letting you know which songs are most popular. The problem is, however, that you end up seeing songs like “I’ll Fly Away” next to the latest Hillsong earwig. The site takes into account all churches, old and new school, so it isn’t necessarily helpful in showing me what more modern churches are using during their worship services. I got the idea to do some Twitter research and compile a statistical analysis of a random sample...

How to Empower Your People to Communicate for You

Quick poll: What website do you get most of your information from? Facebook? Google? YouTube? My guess is it’s one of those three. You know the crazy thing about those information sites? None of them actually produce their own content. They merely help others share. I see that as a huge paradigm shift for content producers – even churches. Because after all, that’s what we do: produce content. Imagine if, as a communications leader, you stopped trying to be the source of all information from your organization, but instead followed the lead of these web giants. What if you...

5 Questions that Will Help You Build an Effective Worship Set

While music isn’t the only way we worship, it’s an important one. There’s something about music that helps people break down their internal walls and actually focus their attention on God. Our moments of musical worship are more than just an ice breaker. They’re more than just a song service or entertainment. But sometimes it just feels like that. It feels like the people in the seats are unengaged. A lot of that comes from the way we structure the worship set. If we just string together a set of our favorite songs each week, that’s what people will...

Does Your Church Create Clickbait?

We live in the clickbait era. You’ll never believe what this toddler did to his dad! Man revives dead pigeon using this weird trick. 15 squirrels you’ll swear look like George Clooney. They’re all titles that offer nothing other than an enticement to click and visit a webpage. And it works, because a click is cheap. Unfortunately, the payoff is rarely even worth that. It’s usually a slideshow stuffed with ads that you can barely navigate through. And even then, the content is never as promised. This sort of approach rarely yields brand loyalty or repeat visits for a...
